With offices in Wellington and Christchurch, our operations are nationwide. As the leading New Zealand coal producer, we provide energy for the agri-business sector, schools, hospitals and many other key players in our economy and society.
We are also an exporter of high-quality coal for steel production primarily in Japan, South Korea, India, China and Australia.
We’re listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) but are a New Zealand registered company, with all current operations and employees located in New Zealand.
We have two operating mines in the South Island:
- Stockton (north of Westport) - 65% owned via BT Mining; and
- Takitimu (north of Invercargill) - 100% owned.
We also operate Maramarua and Rotowaro in the Waikato region of the North Island (65% owned via BT Mining).
We have three further mines. The Cascade and Escarpment mines are near Westport. Escarpment is currently under care and maintenance (100% owned) and Cascade is nearly full rehabilitation. The Canterbury mine ceased operating at the end of June 2021, with final rehabilitation scheduled to finish at the end of FY22.
In addition to our domestic operations, we have permits over 15,000 hectares on the Buller coalfield (100% owned). This is part of our strategic plan to become an exporter of high-quality metallurgical coal. We also hold various exploration and prospecting permits in other areas of the South Island to position ourselves for further opportunities and growth.
We hold a 22.2% equity stake in a export coking coal joint venture project in British Columbia, Canada. The Crown Mountain project is in the exploration stages and once operating will be a coking coal mine for the export market that will complement our current export operations.
